The Heroes Journey

The Hero's Journey

JEAN HOUSTON
So many people I know are in this state of yearning, desire of something is calling, the lure of becoming, the strange attractor beyond time and space.

The call, the wake-up call from central, it's time to wake up now. So I think that that is there. And the sense of living in an outmoded condition.

It's almost like the old hero’s journey where you have a sense something's calling you, I've got to get on with it. And so you start to make... you attempt a new direction. And then of course the old recalcitrance sets in, the refusal of the call. Not now, no, no, no. When the kids are grown, when I have my degree, when I have enough money, when I'm fatter, when I'm skinnier, when I grow up. But then you can't stand yourself anymore.

GERARD FOURNIER
It’s a one step program. The one step onto the path.

Mythology is trying to tell us, perhaps too subtly, that this is not a child’s game, even though we may first become interested in it when we are young. That in essence we are all called...not to do battle with lightsabers against evil wizards, but to a more difficult task. That if we don’t answer the call, one day we will awaken in horror, decades having raced by, and we will see ourselves way back there through the mist, still stuck in the starting blocks.

So we begin again to seek the hero’s path. The journey within, which can be a frightening maze of golden temptations, egocentric delusions and humble prophecies of our unique greatness. All guarded by no one other than me, myself and I. Is it any wonder that many are called, but few are chosen?

JEAN HOUSTON
And then finally you say all right, I'll get on with it. Whatever on with it is. Whether it's creating something or whether it is entering the community life or whether it is the re-patterning of oneself.

And then you enter into the great road, the trials, or the road of adventures. And you take off and you take on quests, you take on new opportunities. And then more allies show up. You stop boring God.
