SAM KEEN
In a way, the theory of the spiritual life is very simple. It's what's on the railroad crossing. Stop. Look and listen. Take time to wonder. Aristotle talked about wonder being the beginning of the philosophical life, it's also the beginning of the spiritual life.
The realization of the incredible privilege of living. And the incredible wonder. And never to take it for granted. And the wonder not only of our own lives, but the lives of other people, which turns into compassion. So you know you don't have to go to a guru, you don't have to memorize anything, you don't have to know all that much.
The problem of the spiritual life isn't in the theory, it's in the practice. It's hard to practice because we're constantly seduced by this other mythology that more success, more money, more power is going to give us our greater fulfilment.
